Studio Berengo and James Coignard.

The collaboration between the French painter and engraver James Coignard and the master glassmakers of Murano represents a major turning point in the second part of his career.

James Coignard is known worldwide for his paintings and especially for his carborundum engravings.

He has successfully translated his abstract and textured world into three-dimensional glass.

From the 1990s onward, James Coignard collaborated closely with the prestigious Berengo Studio in Murano.

The studio became a key partner for the artist.

His distinctive and unique sculptures come to life in three dimensions: representing anthropomorphic silhouettes, head profiles, and torsos with geometric patterns typical of his paintings. The pieces consist of solid Murano glass, playing on transparency and opacity.

Coignard often incorporates gold leaf or intense pigments such as oxblood red and cobalt blues.

Limited Editions: These sculptures (such as the works Deux Bleus or Linéaire) were produced in very limited art editions, signed and numbered directly into the material.

This foray into Murano glass allowed James Coignard to give a tactile, weighty, and luminous dimension to his obsession with material and relief.

Studio Berengo (Berengo Fine Arts):

Berengo Studio was founded in 1989 by Adriano Berengo, who set out to forge a new path for art made with glass by testing the boundaries of contemporary glass-making with his innovative and inventive approach. Inspired by the collaborative work of Peggy Guggenheim and Egidio Costantini in the 1960s who invited masters such as Picasso and Chagall to produce art in glass, Berengo decided to further this creative vision and bring new life to the world of contemporary art through the use of glass. He invited important international artists to Murano to collaborate with skilled craftsmen to create great works of art.
