In 1972 Andy Warhol was commissioned by the architects Johnson & Burgee to decorate the Hotel Marquette in Minneapolis. In 1981, upon removal from the hotel, due to renovation, each print was signed and numbered from an edition of 470. There was an additional 40 portfolios of four screen-prints produced to complete the total edition of 632.
Warhol made each print using only three screens—one for bands of background color, one for the sun, and one with a single color dot pattern. The screens were inked in various color combinations and were printed with varying registrations to make each print unique.
