Note:

This artwork was created in situ on the spot at Grande-Vallée, Gaspe, with has witnesses friends and admirers, as well as the person that acquired this vibrant beautiful work.

Hugh John Barrett flirted with many avant-garde styles, besides a more classic traditional approach.

His top works are influenced by Surrealism, great still-life’s and mythic magic realism like figures and characters, he also used first nation symbolism and legends in his works. He manifested also interests in 60’s and 70’s for the Op-Art or Optical art movement and the Psychedelic.

And then there are his forests and undergrowth, initially classical, but the play of light is always present, then moving towards vibrant and almost abstract post-expressionist elements in his figurative works, to finally evolve towards a total lyrical and expressionist abstraction.

His glory years, without a doubt, were the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. He then gave in to a more commercial, traditional and classical style, under pressure I would say, but he abandoned this trend towards the end of the 1990s, more hidden and secretly to return to creative research and create beautiful surrealist, figurative and abstract works, thus putting aside the controversy.
