Oscar BACH (1884-1957)
German-born craftsman and designer Oscar Bruno Bach born in Breslau in 1884 was among the most skilled and successful commercial metalworkers of the early twentieth century. His designs and production ranged from small, domestic objects to grand architectural installations. He worked in many styles popular at the time, and thematically favored the Zodiac, classical masks, mythological symbols and elements of the Italianate and Germanic grotesque
Oscar Bach began his career by studying painting at the Royal Academy in Berlin and taking an apprenticeship in metallic arts. One of his most prominent accomplishments was making a jewel encrusted Bible cover for the study of Pope Leo XIII, which is featured in the Vatican’s permanent collection.
Bach was an extremely successful metalsmith in Germany as he had many commissions to design metalwork for civic buildings and won the Grand Prix at the World’s Exposition in Turin, Italy.
In 1911 Bach moved to New York City and started a company with his brother called Oscar B. Bach Studios, inc.
