Arthur AESBACHER (1923)
Arthur Aeschbacher or Arthur Aesbacher, born April 3, 1923 in Geneva, is a Swiss artist active in France.
He studied successively at the Geneva Academy of Fine Arts, then in Paris at the Louvre School, the Grande Chaumière studio and the Julian Academy as a pupil of Fernand Léger.
He works with lacerated posters, to use them as a pictorial material. The flaps of posters are used for formal recompositions in his collages and mixed media paintings. He is known as an ‘’affichiste’’ or poster artist and later his interest goes to typography.
His work on the bursting out of typography makes him, in the words of Pierre Restany, “a poster designer who is not a new realist.”
He is knight of the Order of Arts and Letter in France.
