Charles SUCSAN (1923-2022)

Born in Paris of Hungarian parents, Charles Sucsan pursued academic studies in art, completed by a training in ceramics.

After settling in Canada at the age of 20, he joined forces with other artists and opened a studio in Montreal, participating in numerous pottery exhibitions, notably in 1959 at the Palais du Commerce with the craft center of the time. A prolific and multidisciplinary artist, he is best known for his abundant pictorial production in which his works, often very colorful, sometimes borrow from figuration, sometimes from stylization.

He also has created sculptures and abstract murals in ceramic, known as serrated. Collaborating with architects, he designed important pieces for public buildings, notably Bell Telephone at Place Victoria, Habitat 67, the University of Sherbrooke Hospital and Saint-Claude Church in Laval.

A medalist of the Academic Society of Paris “Arts-Sciences-Lettres”, in 2017 he received the medal of the National Assembly of Quebec in recognition of his entire career. His works are part of several public collections, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
