Mary Habsch (1931-2023)

Mary Habsch, born on June 24, 1931, in Welkenraedt and died on December 11, 2023, in Evere, she was a Belgian painter.

Before the war, her family emigrated to Brussels. She lost her mother, Maria Libotte, at the age of 7. Her father, Jean Pierre Habsch (1898-1976), managed the Vestaceram ceramics factory at 106 Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, in Vilvoorde, for which Mary created decorative designs.

Her uncle, Paul Habsch (1902-1988), owned an art supply store, “Art et Dessin,” in Ixelles at 8 Rue de la Tulipe.

Between 1948 and 1965, she studied under painters and professors G. Biron and Georges Rogy (observational drawing), Armand Paulis (watercolor and oil painting), Albert Philippot (painting), and Joseph De Smedt (monumental decorative composition) at the School of Arts and Crafts in the municipality of Etterbeek (now the Constantin Meunier Academy).

In October 1952, she enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.

In 1962, she graduated with highest honors from the Bischoffsheim School, where she taught lower secondary education in Brussels. While continuing to paint, she also taught decorative arts throughout her career, notably at the Sainte-Marie Institute in Saint-Gilles and at the Sainte-Ursule Institute and the State Teacher Training College in Forest.

Mary Habsch was also a member of numerous artists’ collectives, including the Royal Association of Professional Artists of Belgium, the Gryday group, the Cercle d’Art Forestois, the Circle of Friends of Thomas Owen, the Copains du Ça M’dit group (1996-1998), and the Belgian Women Artists’ Federation.

Her studio was located at the “Cité Mommen” (artist-in-residence) in Saint-Josse-Ten-Noode.

She died at the age of 92 in Evere.
