Robert ROUSSIL (1925 – 2013)
Robert Roussil is a Quebec sculptor born in Montreal on August 18, 1925 and died in France on May 15, 2013. Trained at the School of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, he began teaching stone sculpture in 1945. Very early on, he distinguished himself by his artistic audacity and his commitment to freedom of expression.
He is also one of the founders of the Atelier de la Place des Arts, a collective of avant-garde artists.
His work is characterized by monumental, often abstract, sculptures that celebrate sensuality, joy, and humanism. He works with a wide variety of materials—wood, cement, bronze, steel, stone, and iron—and his creations can be found in museums and public spaces alike.
In 1956, Roussil moved to Tourrettes-sur-Loup in the south of France, where he transformed an old mill into a sculpture garden. He continued his work there while exhibiting internationally: in Quebec, France, Germany, Ecuador, and South Korea. He notably participated in the Montreal International Sculpture Symposium in 1964, affirming his role in the development of public art in Canada.
His legacy is immense: nearly 300 works are housed in permanent collections in Quebec, and several museums—including those in Montreal, Joliette, and Quebec City—present his creations.
Roussil leaves behind a powerful, free-spirited, and profoundly human body of work that continues to inspire contemporary art lovers.
