René DUJARDIN (1913 – 2002) – René Marie Dujardin
René Dujardin was born in Antwerp in 1913 and died in that same city on the left bank of the town now Edegem in 2002. He is a Belgian painter, watercolorist, etcher and draftsman. He studied at the Antwerp Academy from 1930 till 1937 and also painting at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp NHISKA from 1937 till 1943.
René Dujardin did a lot drawings and sketches around the Antwerp port aria. He also explored already as a young man the little villages surrounding the now expanded Antwerp industry zones and harbor and also and the Campine region with their typical barns and farms. Many of those villages and historical buildings do not exist anymore. During his art studies he followed engraving classes and before being mobilized by the army he also made a series of engravings, etchings and dry points of those regions. This gives his early etching and dry point prints a historical value too and most of those engravings where made between 1931 and 1939. His works are in the tradition of most notorious etcher Dirk Baksteen (1886-1971) and of cause the influence of his teachers Isidore Opsomer (1878-1967), Albert Saverys (1886-1964) and Franz Courtens (1854-1943) are clear.
It is at a much older age he starts long world traveling to the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the United States, were he became friends with President Johnson and family. Although known as a maritime painter he managed to get away from the style of his teachers and developed his own strong personal style, a certain decorative style with lively rich colors and even considered a neo-impressionist painter.
