Dorothy DEHNER (1901 – 1994)
Dorothy Dehner was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1901 and died in New York, in 1994. She was an American drawer and sculptor.
In 1925, she took a year-long trip to Europe, where she became acquainted with Cubism and Constructivism, and after returning to the United States, she enrolled as a student at the Art Students League of New York. From 1926, Dehner studied drawing with the painter and draftsman Jan Matulka; her early style was influenced by Surrealism.
As a sculptor of abstract totem-like sculptures in wood, bronze, and corten steel, she had her first solo exhibition in 1957 at the Willard Gallery in New York. She also continued to draw, and her style was linked to Abstract Expressionism. It has been said of her work that she drew like a sculptor and sculpted like a painter. Her work is represented in numerous museums and sculpture parks. In 1992, a retrospective exhibition of his drawings and sculptures was organized by the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, near New York.
