Max HOENOW (1851-1909) – Ferdinand August Max Hoenow
Max Hoenow was born in Berlin in 1851 and died in Ebenda in 1909. He was a German landscape painter, renowned for his atmospheric and detailed depictions of forests and heaths.
He studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1869, where he became a master pupil of the celebrated painter Carl Steffeck. Although he began his career with portraiture, he quickly turned to his true passion: landscape painting.
To refine his style through direct contact with nature, he left Berlin for about five years to live in rural areas, particularly in the March of Brandenburg and the Harz Mountains. Upon his return to Berlin in the early 1880s, he completed his training under the landscape painter Carl Ludwig. A member of the General Association of German Artists, he exhibited his works regularly in the major art salons of Berlin and Munich.
Max Hoenow belongs to the tradition of 19th-century German landscape painting. His paintings masterfully capture light filtering through trees, forest streams, and peaceful countryside scenes.
Among his favorite themes and notable works are woodland landscapes and lively rural scenes.
Today, several of his paintings are held in German museums, notably in Wiesbaden, Erfurt, and Magdeburg.
