Note:

This artwork was created in situ on the spot with has witnesses friends and admirers, as well as the person that acquired this vibrant beautiful work. Hugh John Barrett flirted with many avant-garde styles, besides a more classic approach.

His top works are influenced by Surrealism, first nation symbolism and then his forests and undergrowth’s, going from classic playing with light, towards post expressionism abstract elements in his figurative works to finally a total lyrical and expressionist abstraction.

His top years are certainly the 1960, 1970’s and early 80’s. He surrendered later to a more commercial classic style under pressure I would say, but he left that behind and started again into his search of beautiful surreal figurative and abstract works. He manifested also interests in 60’s and 70’s for the Op-Art (Optical art) movement and the Psychedelic … after all wasn’t he a child of his time and with those hippie ideas close to nature?
