Mixed media etching of aquatint and eau-forte on woven paper signed and dated on lower right in pencil by the artist and justified on lower left in pencil « Épreuve d’artiste » (Artist proof). There is also a not identified embossed seal on lower left corner. The edition of this etching is not known.

Note:

The year 1959 corresponds to Marcelle Ferron’s Parisian period, where she resided from 1953 to 1966. It was in Paris that she intensively trained in engraving and etching techniques (notably at Atelier 17). During this pivotal period, she frequented engraving workshops assiduously and collaborated with poets, publishers of artists’ books, and participated in collective portfolios.

Marcelle FERRON (1924 – 2001)

Marcelle Ferron, born on January 29, 1924 in Louiseville, Quebec and she died on November 19, 2001 in Montreal. She is an important twentieth century Canadian Québec artist. Marcelle Ferron arrived in Montreal in the 1940s after having been expelled from the École des beaux-arts de Québec after a dispute with a professor. In Montreal she met Paul-Émile Borduas, and became an ardent follower of the artistic and political ideals of the Automatistes. She signed the famous manifesto: Refus global in 1948. In 1953 she moved to Paris with her three daughters; during her thirteen years there, she participated in several exhibitions, her artwork rose to prominence, and she learned the art of stained glass from master glazier Michel Blum. She also became one of the first women to win a silver medal at the São Paulo Biennial.
