Jos WILS (1909 – 1989)

Jos Wils was born in Borgerhout in 1909 and died in Antwerp in 1989. He was a neglected and nearly forgotten Belgian expressionist artist.

He studied engraving at the Academy in Antwerp where he was a student of Maurice Brocas.

Jos Wils makes his artistic debut in a society that moans under the effects of the Great Depression. In his visual work from the early 1930s, Wils is concerned about the fate of those missing out and marginalized in these turbulent times.

From the 1930’s on he focused on the engraving techniques and was strongly influenced by the German and Flemish expressionists and also influences of lyric expressionistic symbolism.
