Richard SERRA (1939)

Richard Serra was born on November 2, 1939 in San Francisco. He is an American contemporary artist. He is attached to minimalism and is known for his metal sculptures.

He has also made films. He lives and works in New York and Nova Scotia.

After studying English literature, he studied Fine Arts at Yale University between 1961 and 1964. He married the painter and sculptor Nancy Graves, from whom he divorced in 1970.

To finance his studies in visual arts, he works in a steel mill, which will be of great importance in his future work, just like the fact that his father worked in shipyards. Likewise, a stay in Paris in 1965, where he worked at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, enabled him to discover and admire Brancusi’s work: “this is where my passage to sculpture took place. “.

He exhibited for the first time in Rome in 1966 and at Leo Castelli’s in New York in 1969. He returned to New York at the end of 1966, where he has lived and worked since then.
