Jorge CAMACHO (1934 – 2001)

Cuban Jorge Camacho was one of André Breton’s last pictorial “discoveries”. The figures and colors of Camacho are his; the other influences come mainly from universes, such as alchemy, the occult and literature.

Jorge R. Camacho Lazo aka Jorge Camacho was born on January 5, 1934 and he died on March 30, 2011. He was a Cuban painter born in Havana.

In 1952, he left law studies to dedicate himself to painting and in 1959, he met his colleague José Luis Cuevas, they both investigated and study the sources of Mayan culture. Camacho arrived in Paris in 1959 where he met his friend Augustín Cárdenas. In 1961, he met the poet André Breton, and his work quickly began to take on surrealism as its point of departure. His pictures deal with grief-stricken worlds where the most sophisticated esotericism includes an outstanding charm. Camacho lived in Paris from 1975 until his death in 2011.
